Summary

If you had told Helen two years ago that she would be getting up at six a.m. on Sundays to swim in a freezing reservoir and spending her Saturday nights unshowered and covered in mud in a pub, she would have spat out her champagne. But when everyone around you starts settling down, what else is a glamorous party girl to do but to launch herself into the world of endurance sport?

For someone who didn't even own a pair of flat shoes (and definitely no waterproofs), Helen would soon find she had a lot to learn.

Join Helen on her hilarious and soul-searching journey as she swaps a life of cocktail bars and dating for the challenges and exhilaration of triathlons, trail runs, obstacle races, long-distance cycles and ocean swims...and sets herself the seemingly impossible goal of qualifying as a Team GB triathlete.

This Girl Writes Well ... and narrates brilliantly to boot

This is an extremely well written book about mostly the drive to push yourself to see how far your body can go in terms of running, cycling and swimming. Ms. Croydon is a born communicator putting her points of view across in a great story with passion and wit. When I said "about mostly" earlier I meant that her story is also about finding - without perhaps consciously meaning to - people to share the warmth and companionship and joy and then even someone to share love ... at just the right time. An excellent read - completely outside my usual reading zone - but This Girl Did Well!

Unexpected delight

I have no idea how I ended up with this book.. The subject matter and my life are polar opposite.

But what an incredible tale or determination, drama and achievement. With hidden gems on weight management and food explanation.

It's helps that the narrator's voice is easy to listen to.

By the end of a book,
I had no interest in, I was sad to lose a friend. Might have to listen to it again, when I'm feeling uninspired in life.

How did she afford her life style?

I am female and 70 and I stared running 3 years ago after reading Born to Run. Since then I have read several books but I’ve always looked for a book from a female perspective. The beginning of this book describes her designer wardrobe, changing clothes every year (I’ve got clothes I’ve had for 4 decades!) drinking, eating out and living in London!!! To cap it all she says she hardly works any more! So instead of being interested in her running journey I’m wondering, where does the money come from? I find her really annoying and I would like to return the book but it seems that option is no longer an option!

Inspirational

This is a well narrated story that moves at a good pace and Helens story is so inspirational. I’m a sporty person who often gets frustrated that friends and family are not as keen as me to do stuff - I learned a lot about myself from this book!!

Excellent

I can see from the reviews this is quite a divisive book. I found it totally absorbing and relatable though. Helen is a tough cookie and the struggle of early progress through hard runs is inspiring and fun. It's well written and narrated. Yes she is rather disorganised as far as travel to races, equipment and reading event instructions are concerned but that's just part of the drama of the story.
Helen has a talent for running and triathlon but she had to work incredibly hard to maximise this and get the results she has. I loved it.

OK...

I have an all too terrible habit of getting very het up someway through a book, mostly unleashing my not so much inner, but very definitely outer nerdness about rubbish narrators and Grammar, only to come back later, after 'martyring' on, to humbly beg forgiveness 'cos I am a huge pratt..'
Soooo.... I really hope I'll be doing that about this book...

Review on the review...
Yeah, I know, I'm a HUGE pratt...Helen really gets into the narrative, moreover, she makes me feel less feeble in life's journey, and not the only clueless one...I humbly beg your forgiveness..

Engaging read for anyone who dabbles or is starting out in running/ triathlon

As a novice runner and cyclist, I really enjoyed this on audible. I listened to it non stop which I have rarely done. Lots that I can relate too, and some lessons to take away, an inspiring, informative and honest account of finding new dimensions in life. Thank you!

Inspirational and fun

Really enjoyed this book, the writer as the narrator made it feel more personal and the little stories even funnier.
