Summary

Chicago wizard-for-hire Harry Dresden is used to mysterious clients with long hair and legs up to here. But when it turns out the long hair covers every square inch of his latest client's body, and the legs contribute to a nine-foot height, even the redoubtable detective realizes he's treading new ground. Strength of a River in His Shoulders is one of the legendary forest people, a bigfoot, and he has a problem that only Harry can solve. His son, Irwin, is a scion, the child of a supernatural creature and a human. He's a good kid, but the extraordinary strength of his magical aura has a way of attracting trouble.

In the three novellas that make up Working for Bigfoot, collected together here for the first time, listeners encounter Dresden at different points in his storied career and in Irwin's life. As a middle schooler in B Is for Bigfoot, Irwin attracts the unwelcome attention of a pair of bullying brothers who are more than they seem, and, when Harry steps in, it turns out they have a mystical guardian of their own. At a fancy private high school in I Was a Teenage Bigfoot, Harry is called in when Irwin grows ill for the first time, and it's not just a case of mono. Finally, Irwin is all grown up - and has a grown up's typical problems - as a freshman in college in Bigfoot on Campus, or would if "typical" included vampires.

New York Times best seller Jim Butcher explores the responsibilities of fatherhood and the difficulties of growing up with the elements Dresden Files fans crave - detection, adventure, humor, and magic.

Fun stories but included in 15.5 'Brief cases'

Great short stories as you would expect from a Dresden listen but these 3 stories are included in Book 15.5 'Brief cases' so don't waste your credit on these alone.

Narrator seems about 30% interested in the story & makes Dresden sound arrogant without the charm.

Seeing as WFB as an actual book is currently overpriced due to scarcity I decided to try the audio book for my favourite series by my favourite author, as I Jones for Dresden tales worse than a heroin addict.

I wished I'd waited for the Brief Cases short stories compliation (side job 2) and read it myself in 2018.

The story is good, Dresden files 10/10 good, but the narration really takes you out of the story. The narrator pauses at odd times and has a drony voice that annoyed me.

Wait for the brief cases book and get a dozen stories for less than the cost of this audio book.

We loved it!

The narration is acerbically cynical, and yet believably human and humorous. The short stories are amusingly anecdotal to the series, but developed and varied. Dresden is, as ever, compassionate, strangely courteous, and witty, while also being wise, irritating and wizardly too.

Great Story

Really good 3 store read by James Masters, who is brilliant. You do not need to have read any other Harry Dresden books to enjoy this one. Recommended. Side Jobs would be a good book too.

Three great short stories from the Dresden world

James Marsters is just perfect for Harry, a great narrator, setting the right pace and atmosphere. A real treat to listen to.

Three short stories that can be listened to at any point of your journey in the world of Harry Dresden.

Magic

Jim Butcher and James Masters do it again. You'll get more out of this if you're a Dresden Files fan who has listened to the series, as I'm sure most people who are going to buy this are. There's nothing I didn't like about this collection and it's a treat that you usually don't get with shorts, to see the character progression as the years go by between each story. Masters brings the whole thing to life in a way few other narrators can and with the low price for those who buy 24 credits all at once like me, this is a steal because you'll want to relisten to it again and again over the years. Also the length makes it ideal for a quiet evening in or long return journey. If, on the other hand, you are in the one credit a month group and don't have the inclination/available listening time to change that, you might want to wait. So far most of the Dresden Files audios have come to the UK and while there is no audio date that i'm aware of, this collection has been confirmed as forming part of the next short story anthology for the series.
