Summary

Pain. Chaos. Happiness?

Dominic Hart was screwed.

Diagnosed with terminal cancer, no money for treatment, and an athletic scholarship hanging by a thread...he didn't have many options. But the university clinic had offered him a free video game. Some sort of "therapy", they said. A way to while away the hours until he kicked the bucket. Yay.

What Dom wasn't expecting was to get swindled by a surly casino owner right out of the gate. Or get dropped in a backwater hellhole voted the “number one worst starting location in Awaken Online". That might have been because a video game mafia controlled the city. Or maybe it was because even the plant life could kill you. Regardless, his shit luck had obviously tagged along for the ride.

But that's life. The odds are stacked in the house's favor, you're running out of chips, and you have to decide to hit or fold. For Dom, he decided to go all in. What did he really have to lose?

It's just his life and happiness hanging in the balance.

EPIC!!

I love these books this one has to be one of my favourites just that little bit darker then the others. The characters were so grounded and I can understand the pressure Dom was under.
I would recommend these books definitely. I would also love to play this as a game!

best to date

it's a .5 book but in my opinion it has been the best book in the series to date.

Surprisingly fantastic

I'm not usually a big fan of side stories, I'm one of those that easily gets annoyed whenever we stray from the main characters line.
But this was excellent. As a litrpg fan it has everything. The main character applies a slightly different style to game playing which inevitably brings power and success - something which resonates with the game player in me.

The author says at the beginning it's standalone and doesn't necessarily require you to have listened to the previous books and while of course he's right, there are quite a few references to Jason et al. However it's the same world with the same mechanics and just fits very well.

As for the performance, I wanted to give a 4.9 and not a 5.
David Stifel is, as with all previous instalments excellent; my only gripe, and it's a small one, is simply that the voice acting for each character can be easily transposed to each of the main characters in earlier books.
I'm looking forward to seeing how Mr Stifel is going to solve that problem should these characters appear in the next main line book :-)

Best one yet!

This series is amazing and this new avatar and the characters around him are each deeper and more fun than ever before. Each story so far has the perfect balance of despair, character & world building, comedy, and amazing clever plot twists. Can’t wait for the next one!

The best yet

The best to date I love this series of books. My only problem with them is the over use of certain words and phrases. It can be a bit repetitive but this does not detract from the amazing story telling. This is by far the best book in the whole series.

Another great side quest

These side quest books are always brilliant highly highly recommend them if you are listening to the main story.

Boring

Let's see...15 chapters in...3? 4? Plot events have happened. There's no context. No actual story. I don't see what this has to do with anything in the AO history. I mean, Finn was heavily involved in events. This guy is just some poor smuck who has had some bad luck. ...But...so what? Wheres the story of his rise to glory? Bagwell phoned this one in.
