Summary

Backstage nerves are fraying, and revenge is on its way. As Causton Amateur Dramatic Society prepares for the opening night of Amadeus, in the wings Esslyn Carmichael suspects his wife is having an affair with the leading man. And where better to settle scores than the stage?
Chief Inspector Tom Barnaby expects an evening of entertainment, attending only to show support for his wife. But when someone turns Esslyn’s final grand gesture into a gruesome coup de theatre, Barnaby’s investigation suddenly begins.

Great story, fabulous narration
Firstly, John Hopkin’s narration is marvellous. He has played Scott in Midsomer Murders and, deliberately or not, has captured John Nettles’ vocal tone and mannerisms. In my view this adds immeasurably to the listening pleasure. Secondly, Caroline Graham’s writing is skilful and creative. She doesn’t ham up the humour but inserts the occasional delightful phrase that brings a surprised smile. The characterisation is full and rounded, and ‘tops and tails’ the murder investigation. I have read some reviews that say it is ‘slow to start’, I can see why that would be thought - if one is wanting the murder to be the starting point and the investigation to be about police procedure. If that is your preferred plot, you may feel a little impatient. But taken as a whole, a delightful 10 hours or so of John Hopkins’ delightful voice reading a cracking story!

Fantastic
I absolutely loved this. The way you can put characters to their descriptions and vocalised brilliantly. It totally drew me in to all the characters stories. I will definitely find the following book.

Just like the TV Series
Just like the TV Series … except Joyce Barnaby is less glamorous in the book.
A good story with a nice twist.
I will certainly seek out the other Caroline Graham books.
The narration is obviously informed by John Nettles TV portrayal of Barnaby but this is a welcome comfort. One can easily believe it is Nettles in the role - so good is John Hopkins’ narration.
