Summary
The tenth book in the bestselling Chronicles of St Mary's series which follows a group of tea-soaked disaster magnets as they hurtle their way around History.
You can't change History. History doesn't like it. There are always consequences.
Max is no stranger to taking matters into her own hands. Especially when she's had A Brilliant Idea. Yes, it will mean breaking a few rules, but - as Max always says - they're not her rules.
Seconded to the Time Police to join in the hunt for the renegade Clive Ronan, Max is a long way from St Mary's. But life in the future does have its plus points - although not for long.
A problem with the Time Map reveals chaos in the 16th century and the wrong Tudor queen on the throne. History has gone rogue, there's a St Mary's team right in the firing line and Max must step up.
You know what they say. Hope for the best. But plan for the worst.

The best yet!
This series just gets better and better. Zara Ramm’s narration is wonderful - she is Max and her comic timing is superb. Can highly recommend to fans of Jasper Fforde, Terry Pratchett and Ben Aaronovitch. This is intelligent fiction that combines history, action and humour in a way that is highly entertaining.

book 10
Once again Jodi's produced a great story and left it that another book is in the offing. good storyline with the reintroduction of the errant teenager in a very active role not merely passing through.

So worth waiting for.
I cried at the end. I never cry! I’ve welled up, I’ve sighed, I’ve felt loss and been bereft. But this time I cried. Great adventure. Thank you.

Packed with action, peril and cunning plans.
Warning! Don't read this tenth main book in the chronicles of St Mary's series until you are acquainted with our heroine, Max, her arch enemy, her relationship with the Time Police (and their modus operandi) and the origin and circumstances of her son Mathew. You will need all these to truly understand the significance and relevance of what's going on in this book. I strongly recommend you start at the beginning and work (entertain and pleasure more apt really) your way through to this outing. You can thank me later.
The plot has twists and turns as well as tension from trying to decide whose side people are on. Plenty of peril, especially for our heroine. Emotions fluctuate as do fortunes. The reader shares the problem with our heroine of where to place her trust. Jodi Taylor gives a clear signal that there is a companion text to follow by using part of the saying "Plan for the worst: hope for the best" as the title. It is not a cliffhanger ending, but makes it clear there is still unfinished business despite a pleasing (for me) resolution.
Zara Ramm recreates familiar (if you've followed my advice) characters and introduces a few new ones on either side of the conflict. Her delivery adds to and suitably emphasises the text.
This is one of the best books in the series so far, and since most are five starred - you can estimate how good that is.

It only gets better
I am devastated in two months I have listened to all the books and short stories. This has left me wanting more. Not wanting to give away the plot. I highly recommend this series of books. They are not only well written with plenty of humour and pathos, but read with equal enjoyment by the narrator. She made me feel she was Max and I was interacting with her personally. A must read

Tears before bedtime
I love st Mary's books. I got this latest instalment on day one of release. Listened to the previous book then with huge anticipation started hope for the best. I have to admit I wanted Clive Ronan caught how many books can we go on with the same problem . No spoilers here though. As always the familiar characters and smart storylines we're there, but I really missed the whole st Mary's cast. Lovely to progress with Mathew and max though. The last chapters were for me totally unanticipated. Shock horror tears, oh yes all of them. In fact I was in such a state my dog (cockapoo) bought me socks in her mouth. It's her equivalent to a cuppa and a cuddle. . Can't comment on how plot was at the end (spoilers) but I have a long wait ahead of me till the next one. Need more socks brought for me at the thought. Thanks jodi. Please write fast x
