Loved it
TLDR; After years of adventuring an aged wizard decided sod it, I'm done with people, I'm going to go live in a tower. Only life is rarely that simple.
In many ways more slice of life, tower building, but leading to a bigger story. A highly enjoyable read for people looking for something a bit different.
What's it about
Our MC is a half elf and after hundreds of years of wars, teaching and adventuring, and having watched one of his oldest (and longest living) friends die in a botched adventure he decides to retire. Setting out to the hinterlands he plans to build a tower and spend the next couple decades/centuries researching leaving his old life behind.
Why I enjoyed it
For anyone who has read Old Man's Journey by Gregory Allanther, this book feels like a natural progression in his writing (though the two books are unrelated).
Our MC has lived a long life and doesn't suffer fools gladly, there are times when he is the "grumpy old man", yet he is still occasionally prone to rash decisions. There is a tenderness to his character. He has made enough mistakes in his past that he is no fool. While his past has shaped him, he isn't ready to die.
What I particularly like however is that he is incredibly well written as a long lived individual and acts often as such, not necessarily slowly but with deliberation, but still living and as I mentioned earlier capable of swift or rash decisions and emotion.
The first book is not about a reluctant mage who is forced to be a hero again and fight a BBEG but instead has more of a slice of life feeling as he struggles against the world, which is not ready to let him merely sit back.
I've always got a soft point for base building and this has a nice level, ready to fight off monster waves.
The narration is tip top. I've already written a post about how much I was taken in, after listening to it for only two minutes and having listened to the whole book I'm still sold.
There are a lot of hints of lore and things to come, which really help draw me in and make me look forward to the next read.
Why you might not like it
While there is action, if you are looking for an action and tension centred book, then this might not be the first stop for you. It feels more like a slice of life story, with future potential.
This is not about someone from another world who is isekaied or logged in, so the MC isn't so much an everyman.
Overall
I really enjoyed it, if you are looking for something a bit different then I recommend it.

Good first book
It's definitely a set up for the next book but it's really quite good. There is some action but this book is not focused on fighting, it's a tower building story with a look to preparing for a quiet life that is threatened by looming war. Good character building with an older, more mature, attempting to retire MC who isn't afraid to get his hands dirty, he just would rather not do so as to avoid being dragged into more drama.

A really good listen!
fun story with a nice ending to lead to book 2, saw people saying in the review this is leading nowhere but complete disagree, really fun characters and a fantastic performance from the team behind making it, would recomend if you enjoy lit rpg wihtout millions of stats but enjoy the concept of litrpg

Story with nowhere to go
Unfortunately this was more of an introduction to the characters of the book, rather than a tale. All the "battles" if you could call them that were over in what felt like seconds.
You normally get a conclusion of one plot line in a book with the main one moving on to the next book. I didn't get this from this book.
