Some secrets are meant to stay buried
When Ropa Moyo discovered an occult underground library, she expected great things. She’s really into Edinburgh’s secret societies – but turns out they are less into her. So instead of getting paid to work magic, she’s had to accept a crummy unpaid internship. And her with bills to pay and a pet fox to feed.
Then her friend Priya offers her a job on the side. Priya works at Our Lady of Mysterious Maladies, a very specialized hospital, where a new illness is resisting magical and medical remedies alike. The first patient was a teenage boy, Max Wu, and his healers are baffled. If Ropa can solve the case, she might earn as she learns – and impress her mentor, Sir Callander.
Her sleuthing will lead her to a lost fortune, an avenging spirit and a secret buried deep in Scotland’s past. But how are they connected? Lives are at stake and Ropa is running out of time.

A great story, very well narrated.
Although this could be read as a stand alone book, the link that runs between book one and two is strong. a great story that has you gripped from the first to the last.

Brilliant, touching, funny and wise
An incredible follow-up to Library of the Dead, with just as much energy and life. The picture of Scotland - ravaged by poverty and magic, bursting with hope and rage - is such a perfect background to Ropa’s story. I gobbled this up, and I’m already hungry for the next one

A brilliant series
This is the second of the Edinburgh Nights series and though it could be read alone, I’d advise reading/listening to them in order to get the most of this thrilling tale.
The alternate timeline and practicality of magic in this series make them quite unusual, possibly unique, and a joy to immerse yourself in.

Interesting story. Patchy narration
The story flows along well, building and developing on the first book in the series.
The narrator is better than in book one but there are still some issues. They tend to pause after each sentence, which makes it confusing if they are narrating speech. It means it doesn’t flow easily.

Full of incident and plot twists...
I thoroughly enjoyed listening to Huchu’s lively prose as gutsy Ropa struggles to keep her small family afloat in post-apocalyptic Scotland. This book held me throughout as an initial investigation into what is slowly killing a teenage boy encompasses a far wider problem. And this time around, we learn a lot more about the Library of the Dead. I’m delighted that this proved to be such a cracking adventure, and I'm looking forward to the next book in the series. 9/10

Not as good as book 1
This story wasn't as good as the first in the series. It didn't grip me as much but perhaps it's more about the main character's development and here's hoping the next book will be better than this one was. Narrator read beautifully though just as she did with the first book.
